Song Crush Sunday - "Rolling Hills" by Jill Scott
When I first heard Jill Scott way back in 2000, my mind was blown. Not only because her single “Long Walk” was smooth as silk, but because this woman had an epic voice, the like of which my ears had never been acquainted with, and I loved it.
This week’s Song Crush Sunday is a bug that spent a large portion burrowing in my heart most of last year. Jill Scott’s “Rolling Hills,” is about as poetically blunt a person can get, accompanied by some of the best neo soul sounds that I have ever opened my ears to. The song comes from the album The Light Of The Sun, produced by JR Hutson. It’s a few years old, but it’s a timeless message of believing in ones value as a woman.
Clearly the stand out instrument on this track are the vocals, masterfully and flawlessly performed by Jill, backed by some soul-filled harmonies that carry so much of the heart of this song. If we gave awards for best supporting roles in music, those background vocals would take home the gold.
The musicianship on this record is also second to none, deserving an award in a category all of its own. A perfect blend of tone, rhythm, and story. The story they tell is one of the balance of sultry freedom, and reserving it for those who deserve it. I almost can’t put into words the genius of these musicians directed by JR Hutson and Jill. It is the perfect fusion of R&B, Jazz, and Soul music and every time I hear this song, I cannot help but dance and sing along.
Nothing more can be said, you’re simply going to have to enjoy this one for yourself.
As always, listen with your heart and enjoy one of the best songs I have ever heard.
